Iva Ruby Haegele (nee Sagedal)

Iva was born in St. Paul at Anchor Hospital on November 28, 1929 to Mable (nee Dughan) and Eddie Sagedal. She attended and graduated from Murray High School. She was introduced to Jacob Haegele by mutual friends and the two were married on April 26, 1952. They moved to North St. Paul where they raised their six children. Her calling in life was to be a mother and she was phenomenal in every regard. As a couple, Jacob and Iva were very proud of their gardening, especially their beautiful roses. They also had a very impressive vegetable garden and were always going around with the kids to give all the neighbors the extra vegetables and apples. Iva was an excellent cook and used everything from her garden. She enjoyed canning many of the vegetables and made pickles from the cucumbers. Iva and Jacob would take many trips with the kids and they particularly enjoyed their trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota. Each summer, they would take a weeklong trip up north to a resort. However, on this vacation, Iva worked very hard because she would continually be cooking and checking that the family had eaten plenty. She was always concerned about others and made sure they were okay and comfortable. Iva was able to take the trip of a lifetime to Hawaii with her daughter, Jill, in 1985. She was truly a caring and compassionate woman to all who knew her. If she had a secret with someone, she would tell them, “this is between you, me, and the lamppost.” Iva was a naturally intelligent woman who loved to read and work on puzzles or crosswords. Her family was her world and she was most happy spending time with them, playing cards with them, or just talking to them. She never stopped telling them all “make sure you call me when you get home,” even when they became adults. She and Jacob had the opportunity to travel to conventions for his work and took trips to Atlantic City and Chicago (her first time on an airplane was this trip). She was so grateful for those opportunities that his work allowed for them to travel. Despite these convention trips, they planned many things in their life to happen after Jacob’s retirement but he unexpectedly passed away in 1992 just one year after retiring.

Iva is preceded in death by her parents, Mable and Edward Sagedal; her husband of almost 40 years, Jacob Haegele (1992); and her daughter, Sheryl “Sherry” Casey (2015). She will be dearly missed by her sons, Daniel, Joseph, and John Haegele; her daughters, Kathy (John) Notaro and Jill Poeschl; her grandchildren, Molly Casey, Ben Casey, Jacob Haegele, Lacey Haegele, Kelsey Notaro, Heidi Notaro, Gina Notaro, and Carl Poeschl; her dear great-granddaughter, Isabella Pond; her sister, Currine Hitchcock of Roseville; her son-in-law, Joe Casey; and many other family and friends.

There will be a gathering for friends and family on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at Mueller Memorial, 835 Johnson Parkway, St. Paul, with a Celebration of Life Service. There will be a private, family interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. The family would like to thank the staff at Polar Ridge Assisted Living in North St. Paul for their loving care of Iva. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
