Passed Away August 20, 2017

Ken was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on February 16, 1931. He was one of four children to Annie Christina (nee Ritland) and Emil Kvaal. He attended Johnson High School in St. Paul. After graduation, he rode the rails and worked as a real cowboy in Montana for two years. In 1951, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served as a Sergeant. There he met and married Mary Jean Maschino. He continued his work with the military as a civilian contractor throughout his career. He and Mary Jean had four children, Kelly, Dan, Greg, and Jim. In 2002, Mary Jean passed away. Ken then married his second wife, Ingrid (nee von Albert) and he gained three step-children. When he was not working or spending time with his family, Ken could be found golfing around the Twin Cities. His favorite courses were Gem Lake Hills Golf Course and Viking Meadows Golf Club in East Bethel. He was the chairman of the Johnson High School Class of 1949 Reunion Committee and of his Military Reunion Committee. His other hobby was his work in his yard and gardens. Ken will be missed by all who knew him.

Ken is preceded in death by his parents, Annie and Emil Kvaal; his first wife, Mary Jean Kvaal; and his siblings, Eileen Dale and Merlin Kvaal. He is survived by his second wife, Ingrid Kvaal of White Bear Lake; his children, Kelly Johnson of Coon Rapids, Dan (Ann) Kvaal of Roseville, Greg (Marilee Votel-Kvaal) Kvaal of Mendota Heights, and Jim (Deb) Kvaal of New Brighton; his grandchildren, Terri Siegler, Jennie Siegler, Joseph Hartzell, Anders Kvaal, Jorgen Kvaal, Jens Kvaal, Annika Kvaal, Stian Kvaal, Chase Kvaal, Kevin Kvaal, and Connor Kvaal; his great-granddaughter, Alliah Otteson; his brother, Emil (Nita) Kvaal of North St. Paul; step-children, step-grandchildren, and many other family and friends.

There will be a gathering for family and friends from 10:00-11:00 AM on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at Community of Grace Lutheran Church (formerly First Lutheran), 4000 Linden Street, White Bear Lake, with a service at 11:00 AM. There will be a military honors ceremony and luncheon reception after the service. There will be a private, family interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated by Ken’s family to the Disabled Veterans of America group.
