Obituary for Joan Marie Laine (Miller)

Joan Marie Laine (Miller)
Joan Marie Laine (nee Miller)

Age 69 of Hugo
Formerly of Maplewood

Joan was born on September 9, 1948, one of two children to Evelyn (nee Kaivo) and Robert Miller. Her parents raised her and her brother in Superior, Wisconsin. After graduating from Superior High School, she went on to graduate from Wisconsin State University - Superior with a degree in History and Social Studies teaching. After several years, Joan enrolled at North Hennepin Community College where she received her nursing degree. She was a Registered Nurse at St. John's Hospital in Maplewood for over 30 years. When she was not working or spending time with her two daughters and grandchildren, Joan could be found golfing, singing in her church choir, gardening, and travelling. Those who knew Joan will miss her determined, caring, and pragmatic personality. She was very hardworking whether it was in her career, at home, or in her communities. She will be missed by all who knew her, especially her two daughters.

On the morning of November 27, 2017, Joan passed away peacefully at The Pillars Hospice in Oakdale. She is preceded in death by her parents, Evelyn and Robert Miller; and her sister-in-law, Wendy Miller. She will be missed by her daughters, Michelle (Jon) Beck of Blaine, MN and Melissa (Patrick) Holman of Alexandria, VA; her three grandchildren, Annika Beck (age 8), Milena Beck (age 3) and Finn Holman (5 months); and her brother, Ken Miller of Wyoming, MN.

There will be a service to celebrate Joan’s life at 11AM on Friday, December 1, 2017 at Presbyterian Church of the Way, 3382 Lexington Avenue N., Shoreview, MN 55126. There will be a gathering for family and friends from 10-11AM at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to the American Cancer Society or the Salvation Army.
