I didn’t spend a lot of time with Andy, but the few moments I shared with him over the years...as well as the countless stories I heard from his brother & niece...made me feel as if I’d always know him. ‘Uncle Andy’, as I’d always heard him referred to, was not unlike my own uncle. In fact, he reminded me so much of my mothers brother that I often confused stories about them in my head. Both were friendly, inquisitive & filled with a passion for knowledge. I could sit & talk (and often did) with Andy for quite a while. It was never dull. However, what I’ll probably best remember about him was his relentless optimism. Yes, he had his moments of self-doubt & frustration, but I never heard him say a cross word about another human being. This lesson alone is both humbling & important, and is something that Andy gifted to me by his mere presence. I can see Andy right now, smiling, sitting on the dock of his family cabin...content & happy. Judging no one. Just listening to the music of the loons.
